Let’s find out how often should you wash your bed sheets. Everyone loses millions of skin cells every day, and a good portion of those cells remain in bed.
People also sweat and produce sebum at night. Particles of epidermis and fat remain on sheets, in mattresses, and pillows. They become a breeding ground for dust mites, whose waste products are the strongest allergens.
In a dirty pillow and mattress can be found 16 different types of fungus. And also staphylococcus aureus, campylobacter, and norovirus (that’s the stuff that causes intestinal infections). All in all, it’s time to get your bed checked out.
Pillows
If you have extra duvet covers under the pillowcase (these are such covers, often with a zipper), it will be enough to wash pillows three times a year. But the same should be washed once a month.
If you do not use a duvet cover, wash the pillow once a month or at least once every two months.
How often to wash bed sheets
We recommend washing them once a week. But not too hot water, otherwise the sheets will shrink or boil over – 60 degrees is fine. And in case of very heavy soiling use a special disinfectant for washing.
Bedspreads
If your bedspreads are folded up by the bedside and you don’t use them to cover yourself, washing them once every few months should do the trick. If you use them every day or even wrap them up instead of a rug, they should be washed once every 10 to 14 days.
Blankets and comforters
Blankets should be washed once a week. Just like sheets and pillowcases.
If you always have comforter covers on, you can also wash the comforter covers a couple of times a year. Unless, of course, you spill something on them.
If you cover the comforter covers without a duvet cover, however, the comforter cover will need to be washed with the rest of the bedding once a week.
Mattress pads
A mattress cover prolongs the life of your mattress by protecting it from damage and dirt, and it also reduces the risk of allergies to dust mite saprophytes. These mites can find good homes even in the best-looking mattresses. The mattress cover itself needs to be removed and washed at least once a month.
Canvases and curtains
All these additional bedding accessories play a purely decorative role. Bedspreads, valances, and curtains don’t usually get dirty very often. If you’re allergic, you’ll probably have to wash all these bed decorations once every 2 to 3 months. For others, washing once or twice a year is fine.
So do how often should you wash your bed sheets? Yes, bedding should be washed regularly. It’s not even about the pleasant smell of washed sheets, but about hygiene.
